State legislator pay, by state
The categorization of type of legislature is from the National Conference of State Legislatures. Red legislatures require 80 percent or more of a full-time job, with 8.9 staffers per member. White require 70% or more, with 3.1 staff per member. Blue require 54% or more, with 1.2 staff per member. Legislatures in many states also receive a per diem for thing like expenses, transportation, food and lodging. (A previous version of this graphic mislabeled the "red" and "blue" categorizations for the types of legislatures.)
