Henri Martin, a Republican, was elected to the Senate after winning two terms on the Bristol City Council, keeping a competitive seat in GOP hands.

Republican Jason Welch had unseated Democrat Tom Colapietro in 2010. Democrats thought they were well-positioned to win the seat after Welch announced he would not seek a third term, but their nominee, trade union leader David A. Roche, who had challenged Welch in 2012, withdrew from the race in June. He was replaced by Rob Michalik, a former aide to U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy.

One of Martin's first votes was against the confirmation of Superior Court Judge Auden Grogins, whose nomination was opposed by the NRA over her support for the post-Newtown gun control law passed in 2013 while she was a House member. He was one of four senators, all Republicans, to vote against confirmation.

Martin lives in Bristol with his wife, Roxanne. They are the parents of four grown children.
