As a Democrat from a blue-collar East Haven district that turned out big for Donald J. Trump in 2016, James Albis barely hung on to his seat, winning by 11 votes, 5,006 to 4,995. Like his predecessor, Michael Lawlor, Albis has succeeded as a progressive in a relatively conservative town, where the police department was targeted by the U.S. Justice Department for its treatment of Latinos.

Albis is one of the younger generation of House Democrats named in 2015 to lead a committee. His assignment as co-chair of the Environment Committee partnered him with a freshman state senator from a nearby town on the Long Island shoreline, Ted Kennedy Jr. of Branford.

The assignment is a natural for Albis, who recently completed a master's program in the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. He was the chair of the Speaker's Task Force on Shoreline Preservation, which investigated coastal flooding and other issues in an era of rising sea levels. Like his better-known co-chair, Albis comes from a political family.

His mother is an English teacher at East Haven High School and was a member of the Board of Education. His father, who formerly held the elective post of probate judge, is a Superior Court judge named to the state's trial bench by Democratic Gov. Dannel P. Malloy.

The normally diligent Albis missed an early afternoon vote June 3, 2013, on a bill that had become a social-media sensation. It required the special labeling of food produced with genetically modified organisms. It passed 134 to 3, with 13 not voting.

He is married and lives in East Haven.
Election history
Albis won a special election for an open seat in February 2011, succeeding Michael Lawlor, who joined the Malloy administration.
