In only her second term, Melissa Ziobron began 2015 as the ranking House Republican on the Appropriations Committee, elevating her profile. She voted with her caucus against minimum-wage increase laws in 2013 and 2014.

On the highest-profile issue of her first term, Ziobron voted against the sweeping gun-control law crafted in response to the shooting deaths of 26 children and staff at the Sandy Hook School in Newtown. in 2016, she voted against a more modest gun control measure: a bill requiring gun owners to surrender their firearms within 24 hours of being served with a temporary restraining order in domestic violence cases. Ziobron lives in East Haddam with her husband Scott. They have two children, Brittany and Bryan.
