Vin Candelora, a Republican, is a member of the the House GOP leadership team. He gave up his role as the top Republican on the Finance, Revenue and Bonding Committee to become a deputy in 2015 to the new House minority leader, Themis Klarides.

Candelora voted with the GOP minority in 2011 against Gov. Dannel P. Malloy's first-year budget and $1.5 billion tax increase. As the owner of a sports and recreation complex and a manager at a family-owned business, Taconic Wire, Candelora has spoken out against policies that Republicans say give the state an anti-business reputation. He voted against minimum-wage increases in 2013 and 2014 and the passage of the first-in-the-nation paid sick days law in 2011.

He voted against repeal of the death penalty, the decriminalization of small amounts of marijuana, the legalization of medical cannabis, and the gun-control law passed in response to the shooting deaths of 26 children and staff at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown. In 2016, he voted against a bill requiring gun owners to surrender their firearms within 24 hours of being served with a temporary restraining order in domestic violence cases.

Candelora lives in North Branford with his wife, Carolyn. They have three children.

Candelora won an open seat by just 124 votes in 2006, succeeding the Republican minority leader, Robert M. Ward.
